Strawberry Promises

The first time Yukito caught his best friend staring at him, the sun had been shining brightly upon their picnic in the park. Touya was unusually quiet, Yukito realised inbetween savage bites in his strawberry jam sandwich.

It didn’t matter that his past was merely a blur to him; in Touya’s protective light, both stubborn and fiercely loyal, he mattered. Somehow, it felt important to be cared for, as if it had been a warmth he’d been waiting for. But Yukito couldn’t help but feel slightly uncomfortable under the incessant scrutiny with which he was observed when Touya thought he wasn’t watching.

“What’s wrong, To-ya?”

A smile grew on Touya’s lips as the words left Yukito’s mouth. Without speaking, the dark-haired boy leaned forward, and suddenly he seemed to age, growing glasses and a predatory smirk-

The blurry daydream abruptly ended when the dark-haired boy pulled back, and Touya was Touya again. Yukito didn’t understand why he felt a mixture of both relief and disappointment surge through him. However, Touya didn’t give him any time to think it over. He had brushed away some strawberry jam on Yukito's pale cheek, which was consequently put in Yukito’s mouth – Yukito vaguely wondered whether it was strange for him to notice the taste of Touya’s finger more than the strawberry jam.

“Finish your entire sandwich. Sakura worries about you, you know.”

Yukito offered his friend a smile in return, tilting his head sideways. “Sakura-chan doesn’t have to worry, To-ya.” He grabbed another sandwich; peanut butter this time; Yukito thought it was curious that Touya complained whenever Sakura ate it, as he said it ‘smelled bad’, but never said anything when Yukito ate it. All thoughts of Sakura were forgotten as the first taste of the salty substance hit his tastebuds, and he closed his eyes in delight.

Basking in the warmth of the sun, Yukito decided that it was okay if Touya stared at him; they were friends, after all. Touya made him feel more alive than he’d felt in years.

“You shouldn’t worry either. As long as you’re here, I’ll be fine, right?”

He could practically feel Touya’s smile; he always did smile if he was complemented by Yukito. Yukito sometimes wondered why he didn’t smile when anyone else complimented him, but was startled out of his thoughts by the low baritone of Touya’s voice.

“I’ll take care of you, Yukito. Don’t worry.”

Yukito stopped worrying. Touya always did what he promised, after all.
