Unrequited Love

-CHAPTER NINE-

Touya sped through traffic straight past the red lights and surprisingly not hitting anyone in the road. Not that there were anyone there. It was past 11 and he knew something was wrong from the start. He shouldn't have let his sister out. It was the most irresponsible decision he made as a guardian and especially as a brother.

'Why did I ever listen to her? WHY!? SOMEONE TELL ME WHY!!'

-Tomaeda Hospital-

Syaoran carressed his now bandaged hand softly, thoughts drifting to Sakura's condition. Tomoyo and Meiling already fell asleep on their seats. Eriol wasn't there but he soon returned with two cups of beverages.

"Here, drink this. It'll keep you awake. Or maybe you should get some sleep," Eriol said, giving him the cup of coffee.

"...Thanks," he muttered taking the cup. Silence fell upon them until Syaoran decided to break it.

"What do you think will happen Eriol?" he asked staring into his own reflection in the drink.

Eriol sighed leaning against the wall behind him. "I don't know."

They stayed in silence again... until teh doors slammed open causing the girls to snap awake from their sleep.

"WHERE IS SHE!?" Touya boomed. "WHERE THE HELL IS MY SISTER!?"

"Sir, please, this is a hospital--" the lady at the counter began but was quickly cut off with a cold glare. Touya then turned his attention to the only 4 figures in the lobby.

"YOU! WHERE IS SHE!?" he demanded approaching Syaoran with anger burning in his eyes. Syaoran looked back at him unfazed by his glare.

"She's in the emergency room. She hasn't come out since we came here with her a few hours ago," he replied exhaustedly.

Touya then blinked slowly replaying the sentence in his mind. "And what exactly happened to cause this?" he said more calmly.

Tomoyo squirmed in her seat. Meiling rubbed teh back of her neck.

Eriol stood up straight. "She had been hit by a truck on teh road."

The elder looked at him directly. Eriol's expression was calm but he was only holding his his own fury and depression. Touya could tell that much.

He breathed for several moments to calm himself before another outburst and looked at all four of them.

"I... I'll return shortly," he said and walked out of the entrance, leaving them with confusion.

"What the hell...," Meiling said. "Where is he going?"

Syaoran got up from his seat and followed. Eriol closed his eyes. "Just... leave them. They need to do some thinking by themselves."

-At the nearby Chapel 3 blocks away-

Touya sat silently in the church at the front rows. Streams of light were coming through the ceiling illuminating the front altar. He stared at it as if someone was there. He gritted his teeth.

"Why are you doing this to me?" he asked.

-SILENCE-

"She's never done anything wrong." he said softly.

-SILENCE-

"She always been good."

-SILENCE-

"Why are you always making life so difficult?"

-SILENCE-

"Why are you trying to take her away from me?"

-SILENCE-

"She's all I have left...," he pleaded, tears threatening to surface.

-SILENCE-

"SO WHY ARE YOU DOING THIS TO ME!!!" he screamed. His voice echoed in the empty hall.

-SILENCE-

"Don't take her away from me...," he cried.

-SILENCE-

"She doesn't deserve this...," he buried his face in his hands

-SILENCE-

"Or is it I don't deserve to have her for a sister...?" he wondered.

-SILENCE-

"TELL ME, GOD DAMN IT!!" he shouted angrily.

Syaoran watched silently from the back as Touya argued with his own mind. He felt guilty. He felt he was the reason Sakura is in the hospital. He should've seen it coming. Bu he was too blind to the emotions of those around him. He wanted to take Sakura's place in that emergency room. He wouldn't have to see his friends worry and he wouldn't have to feel this way.

But that was wishful thinking. Life never went the way people wanted no matter how badly they wanted it. It's the way life is. Life was a cruel reality everyone lived in where things you least expect happens without hesitation. Like Fate was toying with human lives.

He slowly approached Touya but he didn't react. His face was still in his hands. Syaoran could see the tears on the floor in the dim lighting of the church.

"Mr Kinomoto..."

"Why did you follow me...," he said quietly.

"...I wanted to talk with you."

He slowly lifted his head wiping the tears away and looked at Syaoran's determined face.

"About what?"

"...your sister."

They both stayed quiet for a brief moment.

"What about her..."

"Do you remember when you asked me what I thought of Sakura?"

"Yes, I do. Did you find your answer?"

Syaoran opened his mouth but closed it, breathing with his eyes closed before opening them again.

"Yes, I did find it."

"Well then, say it."

"I love her."

Touya studied his face. 'Well, he's honest, isn't he?' he thought with a sigh. "I see..."

"And I want your permission so I can be with her."

He raised an eyebrow at him. "My permission?"

"That's right," Syaoran said with slight hesitation. "I... want to be with her but only with your approval. If you don't... then..."

"Then what? Tell me. I'm quite interested in what you'd have to say," Touya saidd amused.

"If you don't, then I'll just... stay friends with her."

He chuckled. "That's not quite possible, you understand that don't you?"

Syaoran stared at him confused. "No, I don't."

The man sighed. "If you really love her, you can't trully just except her as only a friend. It's not how love works."

The brown haired young man nodded slowly taking in his words.

"Tell me, if you were to only be her friend, how would you feel? After you've confessed to her? Can you tell me that you'd both feel the same?"

"I--"

"No, I didn't think so. If she rejected you, you wouldn't get over her answer. She would probably avoid you or pretend you never said anything. But you wouldn't accept it in your heart, now would you?"

"...no..."

"So do you really need my permission?" he asked.

Syaoran thought for a moment before looking Touya directly in the eye. "I suppose not..."

"Exactly. I can take a bet you'd go with her, my permission or not."

"...maybe..." he laughed.

"Remember: Love holds no boundaries. No matter what the obstacle may be..."

Syaoran smiled faintly. 'Now if only she was alright... maybe everything will turn out okay..."

Touya felt something moving in his pocket and took out a vibrating cellphone and put it to his ear. "What is it?"

Syaoran looked at him and Touya's expression was shock written all over. "Alright, well be right there," he said urgently and hung up. "C'mon gaki, they need everyone to hear what the doctors have to say about my sister."

"...Alright." he said and they both rushed out of the chapel.

-Hospital-

The two burst open through the doors of the hospital and found Eriol, Tomoyo and Meiling with the doctor near the emergency room.

"What is it?" Touya asked imeediately.

The doctor sighed and rubbed his temples. "Are you the young lady's brother?"

"Yes."

"...Please come with me. The rest of you wait here. This is an urgent matter for family members only."

-In the Doctor's office-

The man sat at his desk with a frown. "Do you understand the severity this has caused Sakura?"

Touya stared at him as he sat down in front of him. "...this is about her condition with 'that'...."

"Yes, as well as her body condition. Someone 'upstairs' must like her because it's a miracle she survived such impact. Especially without even a slight concussion. But her tumor..."

Touya closed his eyes. "What is it Dr Rondart?"

"I'm afraid her condition has worsened since the last visit which was last month."

"How badly?"

"Only God knows..."

"Screw Him! I only want to know what you know damn it!" he outbursted.

"Please, just listen," he said calmly. "The tumor is growing... and you know we can't take it out from where it is. It can cause her to be permanantly paralyzed."

He clenched his fist. "There's nothing to supress the growth?"

"I'm afraid not. The previous medications she's taken before... the tumor seems to have resistance against it now and there aren't anything we can use to stimulate the suppressant effects on it. I'm very sorry..."

"So what are the side effects we can expect now?" Touya asked quiet looking down at the floor.

"Normal side effects as any other brain tumor; headaches from time to time, short term memory loss, nausea... you know it. I regret being the one to tell you."

"No... I saw this coming. It was too good to be true..."

"Believe me, she certainly surprised me. She should've been dead by now... but instead, she's still here, holding it off."

Touya stood from his seat and shook his hand. "...Thank you for telling me."

"You can visit her tomorrow morning when you have time. We've moved her into a private room and it's late. You and her friends can use the rest."

-Meanwhile, Sakura's hospital room-

The beeping from the machines echoed in the room. Her chest rised up and down and her mouth was still covered with a breather.
